Data Management In D365 For Food and Beverage Manufacturers
Process Manufacturing
F&SCM caters to both discrete and process manufacturing. An easy way to divide the two processes is that in discrete manufacturing, the component parts can be broken into distinct components, whereas in process manufacturing, those parts can not.
While there are certain cases where discrete manufacturing may apply to Food and Beverage companies, most will use the process manufacturing tools. Process manufacturing tools support the same functions as discrete manufacturing processes, with the addition of other functions outlined below.
Formula Management
Often called recipes in the industry, formulas are particularly well suited to handle requirements for Food and Beverage users. Not only can they handle variable and constant scrap on formula lines, but they can also record yields of the finished good. This is especially critical for products with high water content to ensure that the correct amount of raw materials are delivered to the production line. Additionally, formulas can be configured to use step consumptions so that if different ingredient quantities are needed for different batch sizes, no new formulas are required.
Substitutions
Both approved and ad-hoc raw material substitutions are supported in F&SCM. This is essential in sectors that rely on seasonal items or items that frequently go out of stock and have a 1-to-1 replacement. When master planning is run, F&SCM can analyze the applicable dates of the formula lines and the available inventory of the primary and secondary items, allowing it to select the appropriate item to use in the planning process.
Rework
Reworking a specific lot or batch is a common practice for Food and Beverage manufacturers. If a quality issue such as product discoloration occurs, or if product needs to be repackaged, F&SCM will allow users to rework the original finished good into either a new item number or the original item number. This allows manufacturers to record the new cost of the item with the additive labor and raw materials while maintaining full traceability. This can be accomplished through dedicated rework formulas or an ad-hoc production-order-by-production-order basis.
